Since 17 years the village Maha Oya has its own volleyball team. And since the Fair Trade committe approved their application, finally a proper court as well. The players take their sport very seriously. There are three teams, trianing is scheduled from 4 pm to 6.30 pm every day, even on Saturday and Sunday. The Fair Trade premium didn’t only cover the proper volleyball court appropriatly secured by a fence, but also some floodlights that make training and playing in the evening a lot easier.
Sports are highly important to Kanagaratnam as well. He works in the tree nursery, like his father and his grandfather. But in his leisure time he runs marathons. He trains every day and gets everybody’s support, from the Fair Trade committee as well: The latest purchase are new, lighter running shoes.
